ISEYA: The Bar That Every KILL BILL Fans Will Love

Edgar Honggo

Posted on February 18, 2012

You’ve watched the movie and Japanese food is your thing, then 99% you would get really excited to visit this Kichijoji based Izakaya. On the menu: Fried dumplings, yakitori, kimchi salad, edamame and fried karaage just to name a very very few. A friend booked a tatami style table and at first I wasn’t very convinced when I first entered this rugged 60 years old shop (it literally looks as bizzare as the set from the Quentin Tarantino directed movie). But after I consumed all the beautifully cooked meals mentioned above and a few glass of beer, what else is there to know? Surely ISEYA stands firm to inherit the status as an unbeatable post-bar hangout.

dilettante cafe – Shizuoka

Edgar Honggo

Posted on February 11, 2012

Set in an old garden just across the railroad, among lots of plants and shrubs. You would notice a cafe with rugged classic furniture. The cafe is more like a bungalow, with wooden floor, and they do simple, beautiful Italian cooking. Located less then minutes walk from Shizuoka’s Mishima Hirokoji Station, dilettante cafe has everything a cafe needs: good food, comfort, fun and adorable beautiful customers inside. What more could you want?

SAPPORO BEER X ROYCE presents Chocolate Flavoured Beer

Edgar Honggo

Posted on February 11, 2012

You can (almost) never go wrong with chocolate and alcohol. As a general rule, here is the bad news: Alcohol is calorie-dense, and so is chocolate. By having the two together, you’ll wind up both of them (and have quite a hangover the next morning, too). A high-calorie night out indeed.

Three reasons to Visit Diesel Concept Store Shibuya

Edgar Honggo

Posted on February 10, 2012

Need a reason on why you should visit Diesel Shibuya? Here I give you three: to shop, to dine and to take on the art.

No stranger to innovative and redefining the meaning of traditional retail spaces. Diesel’s reputation for bold and daring designs manifested itself through their Shibuya Concept Store. Now in their third year, this part retail, part creative, part social playground has already proved to be a popular spot in its own right, where visitors comes back, spend an afternoon taking in the art, drinking coffee, and of course shop at this highly styled and entertaining store. Managed by Transit General Office Inc., this store is very conveniently located just at Meiji Dori’s Cocoti building, less then five minutes walk from Tokyo’s famous Shibuya scramble crossing. This 2 floors 1000M square retail space will be Diesel’s first and largest concept store in Japan.

Inside, the B1 floor will house the Italian label’s Basic lines, the store’s exclusive original souvenir goods section as well as Diesel’s Home Collection. Having many merchandise under their belt, Diesel also added home ware into their collection. Diesel teamed up with Italian furniture maker Moroso in creating its Successful Living Collection, inspired from both the underground world and from nature. The result is a collection of home products with relaxed, comfortable products with simple design and pure lines, suited for an informal lifestyle. Right behind this section, Diesel’s Art Gallery can also be found. The gallery is will be hosting an exhibition by Chinese artist, CHENMAN in an exhibition titled “Glamorous Futurist”. The show will be open for free to public from February 17th until the May 11th. Visitors could also purchase the exhibition’s exclusive merchandises, available only at Diesel Shibuya Concept Store.

Moving up from the B1 floor, Diesel’s contemporary Black Gold line can be found on the first floor, located just next to the concept store’s café, officially called the “Glorious Chain Café”. This cafe serves as a social hub to drink, dine and refresh. The atmosphere quickly propelled this café into a popular local haunt. The menu is also easy on the eye by offering dishes such as: Glorious hot dog, egg Benedict and shrimp’s linguine.

Diesel’s own lighting products also featured at the entrance of this café, adding to the café’s vibrant and cosy aesthetic. These lamps are the result of Diesel’s collaboration with lighting manufacturer Foscarini. The two makers played with materials such as metal and chrome-plated glass. Diesel with Foscarini has created a series of lamps that are unique, unconventional, creative yet vintage. Anybody who plans to visit Tokyo, should definitely visit this spot as it will be very unlikely for this megastore to disappoint.

The Monocle Café – Yurakucho

Edgar Honggo

Posted on February 9, 2012

At first when rumors spread, I wasn’t convinced to hear that London based popular publication Monocle will be opening their first ever café in a non-English spaking country. My subjective judgement was however proven wrong when I visited the café at Tokyo’s business district of Yurakucho as people are really content with the magazines and the overall experience itself.

The global affairs magazine believes that a good retail space can revitalise a neighbourhood with its aesthetically pleasing interior and well-stocked deli. Located on the basement of the newly opened HANKYU MEN’S TOKYO, the Monocle Café quickly becomes one of the main attractions of this 8 floors luxurious department store. This part retail, part café, part social playground is already a popular spot in its own right as where visitors could spend an afternoon browsing through the magazines, drink coffee, refresh and of course shop at the stylish Monocle shop.

The planning and operation of this social hub is entrusted to Tokyo’s own Transit General Office Inc., which is a company synonymous with producing irresistible retail spaces. The result is this relax, organic influenced interior suited for an informal lifestyle. Meanwhile, acclaimed barista Eiichi Kunitomo of Omotesando Koffee he has been put in charge of the coffee and deserts. The menu is also easy on the eye by offering international dishes such as: Japanese Curry, New York Reuben sandwich and Danish Toast Skagen.

The cosy cafe is very conveniently located just less then five minutes walk from Tokyo’s famous Ginza crossing. Anybody who plans to visit Tokyo should definitely come and join this city’s extravagant citizens at this spot, as this café might just prove that even a good deli could also be a source for inspiration.

This article can also be viewed through HYPEBEAST, the world’s premiere online magazine encompassing fashion, arts, design and culture.
