Jewelery Koushou at Aki-Oka Artisan

Edgar Honggo

Posted on February 25, 2012

Valentine’s day may have past but there are enough reasons to visit this tiny jewelery gallery called Jewelery Koushou. For those unfamiliar, this studio was started by Shunsuke Noguchi and his wife Natsuko Noguchi. Both of them are at hand throughout the entire jewelery making process as their detailed amenities are 100% hand made. Their shop are particularly highlighted by its old craftsmanship style while the design is relevant with contemporary taste. The couple’s body of works ranges from 18 karat gold rings, pearl neckless and platinum pendants. As designer Mr. Shunsuke Noguchi puts it, their working process is very simple: They will select a certain material and craft them with careful attitude before displaying them in their store. Their store may not be the most picturesque store at Aki-Oka Artisan Akihabara but you could certainly feel the love vibes from the artisan’s works. So please check out all the goods when you are around, and ladies, please bring your man along.

Asakusa: Past and Present

Edgar Honggo

Posted on February 22, 2012

Tokyo is not all about its neon and business men in black suit. Its classic Asakusa area is just gorgeous as it has a particular style. Most tourists from both domestic and international loves it, as the neighborhood does offer you a real treat. Its ancient temples gives you a picture of its glorious past, while your senses will be triggered by the smell of baked sweet potatoes which collides with the scent of aging wood. As a former fashion writer, I was particularly intrigued with the people here and the way they dress. If you focus, you could witness a great mixture of past and modern Japan at every corner. So please take a walk and you will discover a whole friendly fashion scene that is made of tourists, locals, shop keepers and the legendary rickshaw boys in their extra tight pants.

Hand Made Art Store BONDO

Edgar Honggo

Posted on February 18, 2012

Yesterday I discovered what I would put in my top ten Tokyo hidden gems. While visiting a friend at Kichijoji area, I swung into this very fine looking design store called BONDO. It’s hard to believe that this store is still just a year old. In just over 12 months, this store has emerged as a go-to shopping destination for both design enthusiasts and creators. This growing success is unquestionably mainly because of the passionate gentleman behind this artistic landscape, founder Yuichi Murakami. Besides just being generally awesome looking, this shop also houses designated items for all your thirst for good design. Alongside with the site’s first anniversary,BONDO has teamed up with some of Japan’s breakthrough artists including: Ryota Aoki, YUMANIZUMU and 蝉semi for a monotone themed exhibition. Each of these rare items are 100% handmade and limited to just a few units, therefore I recommend and actually insist everyone to visit the store and check out for Mr.Murakami’s approved items. But for now please enjoy my exclusive peek sneak above.

Kentaro Yoshida – Art OnBoard

Edgar Honggo

Posted on February 11, 2012

Soulful artist Kentaro Yoshida keeps his habits precisely with no-fuss. The man knows what he likes: loose and easy but perfectly balanced with his focused attitude towards art. As featured above, this emerging talent from Toyama’s humble neighborhood is full of wild creativity as he made a name for himself in the surfing and creative community. Known for his fantastic delivery and attention to details, Kentaro Yoshida is only getting better and better as his usual sensibility and no-compromise line works decorates the boards of countless Japanese and Australian surfers.

Today, this part time designer, part time surfer, part time party crasher draws all of his artworks at Manly Beach, Sydney. Since punctuating his arrival in Australia at the age of 17, he has become a genre unto himself, one that features personality as you could easily tell a Kentaro Yoshida surf board amongst other boards. Thinking that someone as talented as him went to the same university can only be very inspirational.
